Tommy’s War – free events focus on city’s culture and history

What was life like in Glasgow during the First World War? Find out at the first of four free events offered by the University of Glasgow at the end of this month to help celebrate the city’s hosting of the Commonwealth Games.

Tommy’s War: A First World War Diary

Monday July 28, 1-3pm @ St. Andrew’s Building, 11 Eldon Street G3 6NH.  Speaker: Dr Ronnie Scott.

Thomas Livingstone’s diary reveals the hardships of the home front, the fear of Zeppelin raids, the blackout and rationing. He also discusses family holidays, the fate of work colleagues who have volunteered, and the escalating price of pipe tobacco.

An Introduction to Scottish Painting

Tuesday July 29, 1-2pm @ St. Andrew’s Building, 11 Eldon Street G3 6NH.  Speaker: Dr Maureen Park.

From George Jamesone in the 17th century to John Bellany and Alison Watt, artists have made a significant contribution to Scottish culture. This one-hour talk will highlight some of their finest paintings by exploring three common themes: portraiture, landscape and genre. This talk will celebrate the achievements of Ramsay, Raeburn, Wilkie, McCulloch, the Glasgow Boys, the Scottish Colourists and many more.

Explore the University of Glasgow campus

Wednesday July 30, 1-3pm @ St. Andrew’s Building, 11 Eldon Street G3 6NH.  Speaker: Dr Ronnie Scott.

Think you know the university campus? Come along for a tour of Gilmorehill and the Western Infirmary (which will be added to the campus in 2015) and check your knowledge of the history of the university, its buildings and its future.

Scottish poor law and the Glasgow poorhouses

Thursday July 31, 1-3pm @ St. Andrew’s Building, 11 Eldon Street G3 6NH.  Speaker: Dr Ronnie Scott.

Were your ancestors ever “on the parish”? Poor Relief was the only social support for the elderly, the injured, the abandoned and those with severe physical or mental health issues. Who paid for this system? Who qualified, and were rejected? Where were the Glasgow poor houses? Find out about life in the poor house or “on the parish” in this free event.
