Creative Mackintosh Festival: a legacy celebrated

The Creative Mackintosh Festival continues all month with a packed programme of events, talks, walks and exhibitions celebrating the achievements of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Glasgow’s most famous architect, designer and artist.

Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s legacy extends beyond the magnificent buildings and art he created and this third annual festival not only invites people to explore his work but also to ‘unleash their own creativity’.

Of course, there is an added focus to this year’s Creative Mackintosh Festival following the fire that destroyed part of the Glasgow School of Art on May 23, with a campaign underway to raise £20million for its restoration.

Here are just a few of the many local highlights of the third annual Creative Mackintosh festival …
* Until Jan, 2015 – Mackintosh Architecture at Hunterian Art Gallery (£5/£3).
* Thursday, Oct 23 Oct (6.30pm) – Music Recital at Mackintosh Queen’s Cross church (£10/£7).
* Sunday, Oct 12 (2pm) – Un-Looking: Alex Rigg and Oceanallover at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum (free).
* Sunday Oct 12, 19, 26 (10am-4pm) –Mackintosh Subway Tour at Scotland Street School Museum and other Mackintosh venues (£10/£6).
There are also a number of free exhibitions ongoing at the Hunterian gallery –Mackintosh Travel Sketches (until March 1, 2015), Begonias (throughout October), William Davidson: Art Collector (throughout October), Book reading: Esther Freud ‘Mr Mac and Me’ (Sun Oct 12 2pm-3.15pm, booking required), and Wednesday lunchtime talks Oct 8, 15, 22 & 29.
And throughout the year there is free entry to the Mackintosh Queen’s Cross Church after 1pm on Wednesdays.
